Bulk Waste Pickup Calendar 2024

To find your bulk item pickup schedule, visit this link and type in your address. Bulk items are collected on the same day as your trash.

You can also participate in Dumpster Days – an event that helps residents to recycle electronics waste for a small fee and dispose of unwanted bulky items, like mattresses and appliances, for free.

Acceptable Items for Bulk Pickup

  • Mattresses – must be wrapped in plastic for collection at the curb.
  • Rugs – must be rolled up and tied with string, and they should not exceed 4 feet long and 50 lbs.
  • Trees or tree branches with a diameter of 4 inches or less, shrub, brush, leaf, grass trimmings, and all organic vegetable and plant matter. Tree branches or sticks under 4 inches diameter must be tied in bundles not more than 4 feet long and not over 50 lbs.
  • You may dispose of two tires per month. Tires must be dismounted from the rims.
  • Toilets are collected at the curb, but the tank must be separated from the bowl on all two-piece models. One-piece toilets do not have to be separated.
  • Refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioners – these items are collected for free, but you must contact Waste Management in advance. To request this service, call (913) 631-3300.

Unacceptable Items for Bulk Pickup

  • Loose lumber is considered construction material and is not collected during weekly curbside service.
  • Construction waste must be taken to the Johnson County Landfill.
  • Plaster, rubble, & wood from demolition and rehabilitation of buildings are not accepted.
  • Ammunition or explosives
  • Automotive parts, commercial and industrial waste
  • Hazardous waste like motor oil, polychlorinated biphenyl waste, non-containerized liquid waste, medical waste
  • Dead animals

Have bulky items the city won’t pick up? You need a junk removal service.

If you have large items that the city won’t take from you, you may need to hire a junk removal service.

Junk removal services are not be as picky about the items they’re collecting so if the city won’t take the item, this may be your best bet. There’s usually a fee involved with junk removal but most companies can tell you ahead of time approximately what it’s going to cost.
