In observance of Christmas and New Year’s Day, Rocky Mount Public Works will collect garbage, recycling items and yard waste by regular schedule except for Dec. 25 and Jan. 1.

Acceptable Items for Bulk Pickup
- Furniture/Mattresses and Box Springs
- Window/Mirrors (with glass taped and “X” marked on both sides so that it does not shatter when collected.
- Lawn Equipment (drain oil and gas from discarded lawn mowers, weed eaters)
- A maximum of two automobile tires will be collected.
Unacceptable Items for Bulk Pickup
- Dirt/Rocks
- Concrete/Concrete Blocks/Bricks
- Hazardous/Flammable Material
- Loose Ashes/Loose Sawdust
- Roofing Shingles
- Car Parts/Batteries
- Logs or Stumps
- Closed Containers (such as oil drums)
- Propane/Oxygen Cylinders
- Tires from Commercial Establishments
- Large Truck or Farm Tires

If you have large items that the city won’t take from you, you may need to hire a junk removal service.
Junk removal services are not be as picky about the items they’re collecting so if the city won’t take the item, this may be your best bet. There’s usually a fee involved with junk removal but most companies can tell you ahead of time approximately what it’s going to cost.
