The City of Evansville is in Indiana with Terre Haute to the north, Bloomington to the northeast, Clarksville to the south, Louisville to the east, and Owensboro to the southeast.

Customers’ trash is collected by Republic Services of Evansville. Using an automated cart system, trash is collected weekly. 

Each customer receives one free trash cart. Additional carts are available for a one-time $100 fee. To request an additional trash or recycling cart, call Republic Services at 800-886-3345.

Trash Pick Up Holidays

Your trash and recycling pick-up times may vary during a holiday week. Here are the schedule changes for 2024. 

  • New Year’s Day – Pickup will be delayed by one day due to the holiday. 
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day – Pickup will be delayed by one day due to the holiday.
  • Memorial Day – Pickup will be delayed by one day due to the holiday. 
  • Independence Day – Pickup will be delayed by one day due to the holiday. Independence Day is observed by our office on July 4 and there will be no service that day. Service will run on a one-day delay through July 9. 
  • Labor Day – Pickup will be delayed by one day due to the holiday. 
  • Thanksgiving Day – Pickup will be delayed by one day due to the holiday. 
  • Christmas Day – Pickup will be delayed one day due to the holiday. Christmas Day will be observed on Monday, December 26. Service will run on a one-day delay through December 31.

Bulk Waste Pickup Calendar 2024

The Utility offers customers free heavy trash pickup as often as every two weeks, except during fall leaf collection, which runs from November through mid-December. Learn more about other important details on heavy trash pickup here.

To schedule a heavy trash pickup, complete and submit the heavy trash pickup form and Republic Services will email you to confirm the details of your pickup. Or call Republic Services at 800-886-3345 to schedule a pickup. The day before your scheduled pickup, place your item where you normally place your trash and recycle. 

Acceptable Items for Bulk Pickup

One item is accepted per pickup, except for items that are usually a pair, such as a mattress and a box spring or a table and chairs. 

  • Appliances – Such as a stove, washer, microwave, dryer, and water heater, as well as a refrigerator or freezer with refrigerants removed and tagged by a certified professional to meet the City’s safety guidelines regarding disposal.
  • Furniture – Such as a sofa, table, chair, mattress, box spring, dresser, and bookcase.
  • Electronics – Stereo, radio, etc.
  • Household Items & Tools – Like a rake or shovel.
  • Carpet – One rolled section that is less than 4 feet long and 2 feet around.
  • Limited Construction & Building Material – In one container; no boxes, bags, loose piles, or stacks.

Unacceptable Items for Bulk Pickup

  • Auto Parts – Batteries and tires.
  • Electronics – Items that may contain heavy metals such as hexavalent chromium, mercury and lead, including TVs, computers, and computer parts or accessories.
  • Construction Materials – Such as concrete blocks, bricks, steel poles or privacy fencing.
  • Hazardous Materials

Have bulky items the city won’t pick up? You need a junk removal service.

If you have large items that the city won’t take from you, you may need to hire a junk removal service.

Junk removal services are not be as picky about the items they’re collecting so if the city won’t take the item, this may be your best bet. There’s usually a fee involved with junk removal but most companies can tell you ahead of time approximately what it’s going to cost.

Recycling Collection Calendar 2024

Evansville provides a convenient recycling program that requires no sorting. Your recycling is collected every other week on the same day as your trash. Eligible materials should be rinsed and placed into the provided 96-gallon green-lid cart. A 48-gallon cart is available upon request by calling Republic Services at 800-886-3345.

Items that may be recycled include:

  • Paper – newspapers, office paper, catalogs, phone books, etc.
  • Cardboard – cereal boxes, soda boxes and corrugated cardboard.
  • Glass – bottles, jugs and drink containers.
  • Metal – aluminum, steel and bimetal drink containers and lids.
  • Plastics – all items with recycling symbols 1-7, bottles, dairy containers, etc.
